How to Choose the Best Guitar Teacher
Entertainment September 1st, 2008If you want to learn and master guitar, then you need to find the right teacher with high credentials, who is well respected for his guitar knowledge and teaching capabilities. Unfortunately, there is no accreditation system for guitar teachers. So, how can you decide whether a particular teacher is good enough or not? Here are some suggestions which you can follow for choosing the best guitar teacher for yourself.
1. Find out the details about the teacher, such as the number of years of teaching experience and the reviews (or if possible some testimonials) from some of the teacher’s older batch of students. The longer the teaching experience, the better it is for us. Ensure that the teacher you select has at least 5 years of solid guitar teaching experience.
2. Find out whether the teacher is available for private tuitions or not. Although many people enroll into a group lesson program, but later on they realize that they could have received far more benefits in terms of personal attention, and more focused learning, if they had opted for private lessons.
3. Find out what style of music the teacher is best at teaching. If he says that he has a grip over several different music genres, then there is no use selecting him or her, the reason being simple enough – ‘Jack of all trades master of none!’ - Therefore, select a guitar teacher who is a specialist in that particular style of music in which you want to learn & master guitar. If you aspire to become a great rock guitarist, then you should select a good rock teacher for yourself. But if you are interested in learning several different music genres, then it is up to you to either take lessons from multiple teachers who are masters in each of those styles or you can simply learn all the styles from a single guitar expert (although they are rare to find for private tuitions, you can learn guitar from them through correspondence).
4. Find a teacher who can offer you more personalized teaching plan (based on your musical knowledge, your guitar playing skills and technique, your musical tastes, and your musical goals) and who does not practice any sort of ‘forced learning’ method – instead, he should allow you to learn at your own comfortable pace. If you can find several teachers who possess all these qualities, then obviously, the price will be the most crucial deciding factor. Select the teacher whose fee package fits your budget range.
